1991-92 NHL Pro Set Series 1 French Edition

As I mentioned in my latest flea market post, I found this on the junk wax shelf of a regular vendor I visit for five bucks. Since the NHL playoffs start tomorrow, I figured I'd tear into this. I busted a box of Series 2 of this same product back in the fall. This, however, is Series 1 and its in French! I don't speak a lick of French but this will be fun anyway.

I won't show off every pack as there were a lot of duplicates and not much excitement but I'll show off the big names, starting with this Messier/Yzerman/Roy trio. Getting cards of Messier as a member of the Oilers is always neat. I'd forgotten he'd played with Edmonton into the 90s. Roy was always one of my favorite goalies after Brodeur and I think I may add him to my hockey PC list.

Modano, Hull, and Fuhr. So two Oilers so far and they must have been loaded in the 80s and 90s with big stars! I like the Modano card as he's depicted as a member of the Minnesota North Stars, as this was shortly before they moved to Dallas. I always think of him as playing for Dallas so getting a pre-Dallas Stars card of him is really nice.

The final trio I'll feature here consists of Jagr, Lemieux, and Gretzky. My favorite of this group is by far Jagr, so much so that I've added him to my hockey PC collection. The dude is still kicking around the NHL and has a pretty good chance at a cup with the Panthers this year.

The main inserts were these all-star cards. I was pretty excited to pull out the Guy Lafleur card, especially since I didn't get a base card of his as he's a hockey PC guy for me.

In closing, I'd like to take a moment and mention that this is my 100th post for the blog! I never thought that it would even survive long enough to see 100 posts so a big thank you to everyone who reads and supports this blog. Here's to 100 more!

Members Only?

These were another part of the giant yard sale haul from this past spring that I've mentioned before. Apparently the person I bought these from was a charter member of Stadium Club (whatever that means) and got these "members only" cards as a bonus. There's two packs here, one "charter member" pack and one "members only" pack. Judging by the back's of the cards that are set up as fake newspaper headlines (sorry, didn't get a scan of the backs) these appear to have been made in 1991. Let's see what lies within ...

First, the Charter Member pack:

First up we have Ken Griffey Jr (and Sr. making a cameo), Bobby Thigpen, and Dave Stewart

Barry Bonds, Cecil Fielder, and Randy Johnson

An odd assortment of characters ... Andy Hawkins, Doug Drabek, and Kevin Maas.

DeSheilds will definitely be going with my defunct teams binder.

Two Hall of Famers, Sandberg and Fisk, along with Dave Justice, one of the top stars of the 90s.

Another odd assortment of Ellis Burks, Dave Stieb, and Jose Offerman.

Two Nolan Ryan cards. He seems to be in just about everything from the early 90s.

Rickey love Rickey.

A couple horizontals. I really like this George Brett card.

And a good collection to round out the baseball portion of the pack.

But wait, there's more!

A really nice batch of hockey cards thrown in with guys I actually remember from the early 90s!

Oh, and there were these football cards. I'll be honest, I have no need for these except the Warren Moon for the defunct teams collection, so if anyone wants to give them a good home, let me know.

Now, on to the relatively small Member's Only pack:

Two pretty nice horizontals. The Orioles one features everyone who pitched in the combined no-hitter they threw the in the 1990 season.

The gold is coming off the Molitor, other than that, it's the best card of this batch.

A very nice Rickey card. I like the Winfield here too.

Another one for my defunct teams binder. Thompson has a bewildered look on his face don't you think?

Let's end with a quote from one of my favorite comedians, Mitch Hedberg:

"I order the club sandwich all the time, but I'm not even a member, man. I don't know how I get away with it. How'd it start anyway? I like my sandwiches with three pieces of bread. So do I! Well let's form a club then. Alright, but we need more stipulations. Yes we do; instead of cutting the sandwich once, let's cut is again. Yes, four triangles, and we will position them into a circle. In the middle we will dump chips. Or potato salad. Okay, I got a question for ya, how do you feel about frilly toothpicks? I'm for em! Well this club is formed; spread the word on menus nationwide."

Now you know how to join the club! How about a sandwich?

A Box of 1991-92 NHL Pro Set Series 2

As I mentioned a few days ago, I hit up the flea market last weekend and while I was there, picked up this box of 91-92 NHL Pro Set cards from my regular vintage dealer. I'm not too familiar with this series and after looking it up online, it appears that the top rookies are Dominik Hasek and Niklas Lindstrom. Let's dive in ...

The cards themselves are nothing spectacular but for me it's the thrill of opening a new product I didn't know about until just that morning. Here are a few samples of some base cards. I really like that Curtis Joseph card as he looks very mournful after letting a goal get by.

I did manage to get the two top rookies (and actually two extras of the Hasek). I must say, I was pleasantly surprised when these came out of the packs.

Three other rookie cards of some notable stars of the time ... Doug Weight, Scott Neidermayer, and Pavel Bure. Love the old Canucks uniform on the Bure card.

You can't open a box of hockey cards without pulling cards of these guys. These are part of the "Captains" subset but aside from the "captain" strip above the logo, these are exactly like the base cards.

More captains cards. Check out that old, all red Flames uniform.

Leaders is another subset contained within that showcases the league leaders from the previous seasons in different categories. To this day, I still can't figure out, or remember, what Plus/Minus is.

The best of the rest. I think I like the Messier captain card better than the standard base card. Couple of nice goalie cards here too in Fuhr and Vanbiesbrouck.

For five bucks, this was a pretty fun little break, especially for a product I was not familiar with at all. I got some good rookies, some stars, and some cards that will go towards my side project of collecting cards from defunct teams. I definitely encourage going out to the flea market or card shop and every once in a while and picking up a box of junk wax that you're not familiar with and have some fun breaking it while discovering new cards.
